An Outreach Visit to Oko-Agbon, a riverine community sited in Agboyi-Ketu LCDA
“I pleaded with my son to sleep hungry that night, believing that if God cared at all, He would send someone to us tomorrow.”
Those words broke my heart. The woman who shared this story had been on the verge of giving up. This was during one of our charity outreach on the 23rd of December 2023, just two days before Christmas. We had over 160 young people in attendance – both male and female.
The community of Oko-Agbon, a remote area located across the Agboyi River experienced joy as we stormed the area with hope.
Interestingly, Agboyi township is a riverine community sited in Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area, Lagos. it is bounded by Alapere in the west and Ogudu in the South. It is, however an isolated Island with no connecting bridges to link to the neighbouring communities. It is noteworthy to mention that this community is over 600 years old and remains one of the oldest Lagos towns.
Though I had always dreaded traveling on canoes, but that day, I had no choice. To me, it was a clarion call, and our goal was simple: to bring hope to a community that needed it.
We didn’t have enough funds to buy everything we wanted—food, clothes, and toiletries—but we trusted God and made the most of what we had.
With the prevailing economy being tough, we knew many families around Oko Agbon in the Agboyi community were anxious—wondering what to feed their children, how to get clothes for Christmas, and just trying to survive the season.
We also knew that situations like this could leave young people vulnerable. So, we decided to do something. We called for volunteers and reached out to donors. Thankfully, the response was encouraging. The traditional leaders led by Elder Ilori the Chairman of the community.
They welcomed us warmly and even helped identify the most vulnerable households.
With a team of 20 volunteers, we marched into the community carrying bags of raw food, shoes, clothes, toiletries, Bibles, and above all, love.
It was more than just giving items—it was about sharing light in a dark time. And truly, hope came alive again.
One moment we’ll never forget was when a young woman—single mother—came forward and shared her heart. She had been considering suicide. She felt completely hopeless… until that day.
That moment was full of mixed emotions. But above all, it was deeply fulfilling.
And it left us with one powerful question: What if we never showed up?
Four Lessons from Our Visit to Oko-Agbon Community
- Your little act of kindness could be someone’s proof that God still cares. People don’t always need big miracles. Sometimes, they just need to know they are seen.
- One step, one seed, one YES can change a generation. Never underestimate the power of small beginnings—your little effort can set off a chain reaction of hope.
- Lives will remain in darkness until you rise. You may think your capacity is small, but even a single candle can break the darkness.
- You are the answer to someone’s prayer. Don’t wait for the “perfect moment” to help—act now and trust God for direction.
